The History of Chiffon Fabric

Luxury fabrics such as chiffon have been used since the 1700's in Europe to indicate status and wealth. Chiffon is a plain-weave, sheer fabric made from highly twisted filament yarns. Originally, the yarns were silk; now they can also be polyester, rayon, cotton-poly blends and other manufactured fibers. The history of silk dates back 3,000 to 4,000 B.C. in China. Chiffon was made exclusively of silk until nylon was invented in 1938. In 1958, polyester was produced and polyester chiffon became more widely used because of its cost and durability. Traditionally, silk chiffon has been used around the world. In 1986 the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., displayed traditional, embroidered chiffon caftans from Saudi Arabia worn by townswomen in the privacy of their homes, demonstrating the worldwide appeal of the fabric.
Today chiffon fabric often used in the creation of night gowns, dancing costumes, wedding dresses and curtains and also used for special-occasion dress such as bridal gowns, prom dresses and other types of formal wear. Chiffon is sheer, so when used for formal wear it is typically used on top of another solid fabric. It can also be draped or gathered to create a more solid appearance.
